Reducing the Costs of Disturbances to the Electric Power Network
Electric power networks are operated by human and mechanical agents, each with some autonomy. This paper describes two methods for coordinating the efforts of mechanical agents (relays, voltage regulators, and governors) using software agents distributed throughout the power system in order to reduce the social costs of disturbances. As evidenced by recent blackouts in Europe and North America,...

Science serves its readers as a forum for the presentation and discussion of important issues related to the advancement of science, including the presentation of minority or conflicting points of view, rather than by publishing only material on which a consensus has been reached. Accordingly, all articles published in Science-including editorials, news and comment, and book reviews -are signed...
متن کاملStatistical analysis of electric power production costs
Electricity cannot be conviently stored. Thus there should be sucient production at all times to meet the demand for electric power. If a low-cost generating unit fails this will lead to its substitution by a higher cost unit. The cost of producing electric power is a random variable because it depends upon two uncertain quantities, demand and the availability of the generating units. Analytic...
متن کاملReducing costs with computer power management
In this work, we present a software-based solution to automate the power control of desktop computers. The deployment of the proposed software system is simply done over the existing infrastructure of the organization, thus minimizing the required investment. Our initial analysis shows a cost reduction of more than 52% by reducing the power consumption of computers and their monitors.
متن کاملTruthful mechanisms for combinatorial AC electric power allocation
Traditional studies of combinatorial auctions often only consider linear constraints (by which the demands for certain goods are limited by the corresponding supplies). The rise of smart grid presents a new class of auctions, characterized by quadratic constraints. Yu and Chau [AAMAS 13’] introduced the complex-demand knapsack problem, in which the demands are complex-valued and the capacity of...
